Digital Pathology Education & Interactive Examination Platform
Overview
This project involved developing a browser-based digital pathology platform for education and interactive examinations, enabling students and instructors to work with extremely high-resolution microscopic tissue slides.
Beyond digitizing pathology slides, the platform recreated the experience of exploring tissue samples through a standard web browser while combining deep zoom visualization, educational content, annotations, and examination workflows within a unified learning environment.
The Problem
Traditional pathology education depended on physical microscopes and glass slides, limiting access to learning materials and making remote education, collaborative review, and large-scale examinations difficult to conduct.
Educational institutions needed a way to provide students and instructors with the same level of interaction they would have in a laboratory while removing the logistical constraints of handling and distributing physical specimens. Existing digital solutions also struggled to provide a smooth viewing experience for extremely high-resolution pathology slides through a standard web browser.
The project aimed to recreate the experience of examining tissue samples digitally, making pathology education and assessments more accessible without compromising the way students interacted with microscopic images.
Engineering Challenges
- Visualizing multi-gigabyte pathology slides through progressive, multi-resolution image loading in a standard web browser.
- Recreating microscope-like exploration with responsive panning and incremental zooming.
- Keeping educational annotations and examination activities synchronized with precise locations during slide navigation.
My Contributions
- Conducted on-site workflow analysis to understand pathology education and examination processes before defining the solution.
- Designed the browser-based approach for navigating pathology slides.
- Developed the frontend of the digital pathology platform.
- Built the interactive educational and examination experience on top of pathology slides.
- Collaborated with the backend engineer on image processing workflows and platform integration.
Technical Highlights
Adapting Map-Style Navigation: Rather than reproducing microscope controls directly, the platform adopted map-style navigation concepts to enable intuitive exploration of extremely large pathology slides through smooth panning and incremental zooming.
Interactive Educational Layer: Designed an interactive layer that associated persistent markers with pathology slides, allowing learning material, guidance, annotations, and examination activities to remain synchronized with image navigation.
Flexible Image Preparation Pipeline: Supported both server-side and offline image preparation workflows, allowing institutions to work with multi-gigabyte pathology slides that were often impractical to upload through standard web interfaces.
Progressive Multi-Resolution Rendering: Implemented progressive tile-based rendering that enabled interactive exploration of multi-gigabyte pathology slides in a standard web browser while keeping memory usage and network transfer manageable.
