Mashhad City Identity & Visitor Information Platform
Overview
This project involved developing a multilingual city identity platform for the International Relations Office of Mashhad Municipality.
Beyond functioning as a conventional municipal website, the platform served as a long-term digital representation of the city for international visitors. It combined multilingual content, cultural landmarks, visitor information, and interactive experiences within a centralized content management system, enabling non-technical staff to continuously maintain and expand the platform without developer involvement.
The Problem
The Municipality of Mashhad sought to establish an official digital presence that introduced the city's cultural identity, heritage, and visitor information to an international audience.
While information about Mashhad existed across different organizations and websites, there was no dedicated platform that presented the city through a consistent digital experience comparable to the official destination websites of major international cities. The project was intended to represent Mashhad's identity rather than provide commercial tourism services.
The project aimed to create an official city website that combined cultural, historical, and practical visitor information within a unified experience, using a visual language inspired by Iranian-Islamic design to reflect the city's identity.
Engineering Challenges
- Designing a multilingual content structure that supported fully localized content across the platform while allowing additional languages to be introduced without restructuring the application.
- Implementing an interactive city map on a static city illustration by translating administrator-managed coordinates into accurately positioned points of interest.
My Contributions
- Participated in requirements analysis and solution design alongside the backend engineer.
- Designed and implemented the frontend architecture for fully localized content, allowing new languages to be introduced without frontend changes.
- Built the interactive city map with dynamically managed points of interest.
- Delivered administrator training after deployment to support ongoing content management.
Technical Highlights
Language-Agnostic Content Model: Built the frontend around a localized content structure that allowed pages, widgets, events, and other content to expand to additional languages without frontend changes.
Configurable Content Platform: Developed a content management architecture that enabled municipality staff to manage pages, widgets, galleries, events, FAQs, news, and other public content without developer involvement.
